Cannabis (Marijuana) Poisoning

Cannabis, also known as Marijuana, CBD, Hemp, refers to the dried flowers, leaves, stems, and seeds of the cannabis plant. Other common names for cannabis include, but are not limited to, marijuana, pot, weed,  chronic, dank, and ganja. Cannabis is legal in California and has become easier for people to access. Cannabis comes in a variety of products. Edibles are one such product, where cannabis is mixed with food items like candy, cookies, soda, and brownies.

As cannabis have become more accessible, people—especially children—are at higher risk for unintentional cannabis poisoning, especially from edibles. The rate of cannabis-related calls to CPCS more than doubled from 2016 to 2024. The largest increases were seen in cannabis exposure among youths:

  • 445% increase among children under the age of 6
  • 151% increase among youth between the age of 6 to 19
  • 61% increase among adults over the age of 19

About Cannabis Poisoning

Consuming cannabis may cause unpleasant symptoms in adults and more severe symptoms in children, even with a small amount.

Cannabis Risks

The cannabis plant contains cannabinoids that are known to harm a person's memory, ability to learn, and ability to pay attention with regular use. It can also increase the risk of anxiety, depression, psychosis, suicide, and substance use/abuse. While a fatal overdose is unlikely, consuming high concentrations of cannabis can affect a person’s judgment. Some people may develop an addiction or cannabis/marijuana use disorder.
